CGL in 2015: An Update!

Hello you all everybody! This is a long overdue update about what Cancer Gets LOST has been up to and what we have planned for the next two years.

Recent CGL auction item acquisitions and autographs include the shows LOST, Once Upon a Time & The Walking Dead

FUNDRAISING

In 2014, CGL raised almost $80,000 for the American Cancer Society through auctions and live events – thanks to your incredible generosity and support!

In April of this year, you helped us raise over $2,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand in the U.S. and The Brain Tumour Charity in the UK!

Later this year, we aim to host a smaller online fundraiser, in memory of our dear friend Bonnie Craft. 20-40 items will be up for bids via CGL on eBay; 100% of net proceeds to benefit a cancer charity (TBD).

REDESIGN

Thanks to Jared, CGL’s C0-Founder and Autograph Acquisitions Manager, Cancer Gets LOST has a new look! We are in the process of moving hosts/servers and updating this site, and will incorporate the new banner – as well as potentially create CGL t-shirts and other merchandise.

WALKER STALKER CONS!

Jared continues to work for Walker Stalker Con and travels with them to every city on their tour, which is fantastic – because the kind folks at WSC allow him to get items signed by the actors at the cons for our next charity auction! In addition to almost all cast members from The Walking Dead, Jared has secured autographs on auction items from actors on Breaking Bad and LOST (including our friends Nestor Carbonell, Mira Furlan & Harold Perrineau, and Henry Ian Cusick and Elizabeth Mitchell)!

DONATIONS

We are thrilled to announce that anyone interested in making a financial donation directly to Cancer Gets LOST is now able to do so via Paypal! Please click on the Donations tab above for more information.

2016 CGL CHARITY AUCTION

Our next large online auction will begin on August 15, 2016 (yes, LOST numbers: 8.15.16), hosted by our partner Blacksparrow Auctions, and will feature several hundred rare and/or signed items from various television shows and films! 100% of net proceeds from this auction will be donated directly to Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a terrific organization that funds research to find better treatments and cures for children with cancer.

Thanks to amazingly generous actors, writers and producers that I’ve been meeting with (as well as lovely friends acquiring items on our behalf), we now have rare and/or autographed memorabilia for our next auction from over 25 shows (new additions include The 100, Orphan Black, Sons of Anarchy, The X-Files) and films like Star Wars! For a complete list of shows and films represented in our next auction thus far, click on the 2016 Auction tab above!

Jo with Damon at the 2015 ATX Television Festival

Although neither are seeking credit for donating anything, we are delighted to share that both Damon Lindelof and Bad Robot have made incredibly significant item contributions to our 2016 charity auction! In addition to many rare and signed LOST items, we now have props and limited edition memorabilia from Alcatraz, Fringe and Person of Interest!

SDCC 2015

We will both be attending San Diego Comic-Con once again this year, doing what we love – connecting and collecting! There is a slight possibility that we will be hosting a casual CGL meet-up (with a charitable angle of course) on Saturday along with our friends at The 100 Charity Project, so stay tuned to our Twitter and Facebook pages for updates. If you see us around, please come introduce yourselves and say hello!

In addition, we are strongly considering and looking into having a Cancer Gets LOST booth at SDCC in 2016! Charity auction items would be on display, and we would feature a Donation Drop Off area for attendees who are interested in donating any rare/signed items or memorabilia of interest that they acquired at the con for our next charity auction! We will keep you posted, should this become a reality.

Thank you for your interest in and support of CGL!

– Jo

The Hatch Door is Now Open: Welcome to the 2014 CGL Charity Auction!

The time has finally arrived! Two years in the making, we are very proud to present the official 2014 Cancer Gets LOST charity auction hosted by Blacksparrow Auctions! HERE is the link for auction, which is open 1 day early! It will remain open online until September 27, and anyone around the world is welcome to register and bid!

Bid Together, Buy Alone

If you are interested in participating in our 2014 Cancer Gets LOST charity auction by bidding on any of the 455 items, registration is now open! There are a few simple steps to register on the auction home page, and the approval process is quick (usually same day).

Questions?

All auction instructions, bidding, payment and shipping information is located right on the home page of the auction! If you have any logistical questions about the auction or auction items consigned by Blacksparrow, please contact them via this Contact Us form or email (blacksparrowauctions@gmail.com).

If you have any questions about Cancer Gets LOST items specifically, please email Jo (jo@jopinionated.com).

Charity of Choice

As a reminder, 100% of final bids (“hammer price”) from all CGL designated items will be donated to the American Cancer Society. We selected this charity because cancer has affected our own families recently, as well as so many of yours – and the ACS is a fantastic resource for cancer research, programs and services.

The auction itself is dedicated to the memory of Amy Jensen, wife of our good friend Jeff Jensen from Entertainment Weekly. Amy passed away in June after bravely battling brain cancer for many years. We are honored to be able to raise money for an organization that offers support for families like the Jensens.

If you are interesting in supporting the cause but not bidding on anything in the auction, we encourage you to please make a donation to the ACS on their site. Of course you do not need to designate that it is for CGL; donate in honor or in memory of anyone you choose. Please email Jo your donation receipt for any contribution amount (jo at jopinionated dot com); we would love to send you either a CGL wristband or poster.  And your name will be added to our list of 2014 CGL ACS supporters.

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and FB for daily auction item highlights and updates. Thank you in advance for your interest, support and helping to spread the word!

Namaste!

Jo & Jared

[By The] Numbers: The 2014 CGL Charity Auction hosted by Blacksparrow Auctions

In the interest of complete transparency, we wanted to explain exactly what you will be paying, why, and to whom when the 2014 Cancer Gets LOST charity auction opens on September 1 and closes on September 27.

The Whole Truth

Most of you may not be aware than for our first CGL auction in 2012, the two of us paid thousands of dollars for the shipping and insurance of 280 items to winning bidders around the world. We did so out of our own pockets and it was our choice to do so. Rookie mistake! In addition, we paid thousands of dollars in back-end fees when the auction closed, to our former auction site host. Also out of pocket. We certainly do not regret it, but to be frank – we are just two very passionate people running a grassroots charity on our own, with zero budget/funding/sponsorships. And in order to continue following our hearts and doing what we absolutely love, fundraising for cancer organizations via auctions of rare and autographed pop culture memorabilia, we are simply unable to cover shipping and auction site fees.

For these reasons, we chose to partner and work with Blacksparrow Auctions for the foreseeable future! Blacksparrow is an experienced and professional auction company that is very generously hosting the 2014 CGL auction for us. The amount of incredibly hard work that it takes to create an auction of this magnitude cannot be understated, and we would truthfully not have one at all this year without their help.

Through the Looking Glass: Winning Bids/Hammer Prices

When the auction ends on September 27, your final winning bid amount (“hammer price”) on all Cancer Gets LOST items will be donated to the American Cancer Society through Blacksparrow Auctions. In addition, on your invoice you will see a 20% Buyer’s Premium charge, plus shipping, from Blacksparrow. Please keep in mind that almost every traditional auction operates this way.

EXAMPLE: If you bid on & win a signed poster for $100, the hammer price will be $100.
On your invoice
$100 to be donated to the American Cancer Society via Blacksparrow Auctions
$20 is your Buyer’s Premium for Blacksparrow Auctions
Shipping cost to be determined, depending on size and weight of item
There will be a 9% sales tax for CA residents only

Follow the Leader

Please refer to Blacksparrow Auctions’ specific Terms and Conditions on their site, and email them (blacksparrowauctions@gmail.com) with ALL logistical questions about the auction, Buyer’s Premiums, shipping, etc.!

Thank you in advance for your patience, interest and support! We will be posting the charity auction link here and on social media as soon as it is live on Monday, September 1!

2014 Charity Auction Details!

In just two weeks, our huge online charity auction opens! Beginning September 1 and ending on September 27, the official 2014 Cancer Gets LOST charity auction will be open to fans and collectors around the globe.

Jared models an authentic Dharma jacket, donated by Sterling Beaumon, that will be available in our charity auction!

Hosted By An[other]

The CGL charity auction is hosted by our partner Blacksparrow Auctions, and we will be posting Further Instructions about their bidding, payment and shipping processes next week. A digital catalog of items in the auction will be available on September 1; we will link to that here and on Twitter/FB.

Charity of Choice

100% of the proceeds from all CGL items in the auction will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society! In addition, a percentage of the proceeds from a few items in the auction that are consigned through Blacksparrow Auctions (entirely separate from CGL) will also be donated to the ACS! Auction items will be very clearly designated as CGL or Blacksparrow.

If you prefer to support CGL by making a financial contribution to the ACS rather than bid on items in our charity auction, here are simple instructions to do so. We already have a generous friend who has offered to match the first $500 donated to the ACS via CGL!

Our Hearts and Minds

We selected the ACS as our charity of choice this year because Jo’s mother-in-law has pancreatic cancer. The auction itself is dedicated to the memory of Amy Jensen, wife of our good friend Jeff Jensen from Entertainment Weekly. Amy passed away in June after bravely battling brain cancer for many years. We are honored to be able to raise money for an organization that offers support to all families facing cancer with and on behalf of their loved ones.

The Items Behind the Curtain

On September 1, we’re so excited to be able to share with you the incredible items that have been donated and that we’ve been collecting for this charity auction over the last two years! Here is a list of the films and television shows with signed or rare memorabilia featured in our auction.

We would not be able to put this auction together without the incredible support of the many who have kindly taken the time to either sign or donate items. Your contributions are so very appreciated.

Our friend Daniel Roebuck stopped by the Blacksparrow Auctions warehouse recently to sign a Dr. Arzt bobblehead for the auction, and we also attempted to make this silly promo video!

Stay tuned for more auction details and frequent updates!

Namaste,

Jared and Jo

The Long (San Diego Comic) Con!

Last weekend we attended San Diego Comic-Con once again, with the primary focus of networking for the charity and getting on the radar of folks who may want to contribute videos or auction items in the future! We are happy to report that with the help of many CGL friends, many pieces of memorabilia that will be featured in our upcoming charity auction were acquired during this trip! As a reminder, our online charity auction (hosted by Blacksparrow Auctions), opens on September 1, 2014 and runs through September 27. The auction is open to anyone around the globe, and proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society!

Sam Underwood, currently starring as Luke/Mark on The Following and formerly Zach Hamilton on Dexter, kindly signed this Dexter: The Final Season DVD for our auction!

Dexter: The Final Season DVD

In addition, Sam also arranged to get the SDCC 2014 name placards signed by his co-stars and show runners from The Following for us!

The Following cast & show runner SDCC placards

Just as she did at SDCC 2013, the very sweet and generous Evangeline Lilly (Kate on LOST, Tauriel in The Hobbit, soon to be Hope in Ant-Man) signed a copy of her book The Squickerwonkers for our charity auction! We will have signed copies of both last year’s soft cover version and this year’s hard cover updated version of her book in the auction.

Jo with Evangeline Lilly at NerdHQ, SDCC 2014

In other LOST-alum related news, Jo was also lucky enough to run into Harold Perrineau – who was at SDCC promoting his new show Constantine. Although he was literally running from one event to the next, he took the time to sign a Michael & Walt costume card for the auction!

We are so grateful to those behind and in front of the camera in the film/TV industry that continue to support our cause; their contributions significantly elevate our auction offerings and fundraising opportunities.

Stay tuned for many more auction updates and instructions this month!

Namaste,

– Jo & Jared

There’s No Place Like Home: The Paley Center for Media!

Shannon and Boone costumes from LOST, on exhibit at The Paley Center for Media

As we previously announced, there is a new LOST exhibit at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, CA. It features screen-used LOST props and costumes that will be up for bid in our next charity auction in September – hosted by Blacksparrow Auctions! 100% of the proceeds from all auction items sold on behalf of Cancer Gets LOST will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society, and a portion of all proceeds from consigned items acquired by Blacksparrow Auctions will also be donated to the ACS!

The Paley Center is generously hosting an official reception on Thursday, April 24 called Get LOST at The Paley – we will both be there, along with the press and a few special guests! The event is open to the public, but you must RSVP to the email address on the invite below.

The exhibit will be on display for the next several months, so we hope that many of you have the chance to visit and let us know about your experience! We are so grateful for this opportunity, and would like to thank both Blacksparrow Auctions and The Paley Center for Media for allowing us to be a part of this amazing exhibit. Their support, in addition to the incredible ongoing support of the LOST community, continues to be equally humbling and motivating. Our #1 goal and priority is to raise awareness and money for cancer charities, and because of YOU we are able to do so!

In addition, we have made a few familiar LOST friends during our ongoing charity auction outreach, and recently Nestor Carbonell kindly recorded this video to help us promote the cause!

Namaste, Nestor! And we hope to see many of you next week!

Hosted by Another: Blacksparrow Auctions & The Paley Center LOST Exhibit!

NEW AUCTION HOST!

We are equally excited and relieved to have partnered with Blacksparrow Auctions to host our next charity auction in September! Fong and his team at Blacksparrow have many years of experience in the auction industry, and they are also huge LOST fans.

In addition to the hundreds of items from LOST and various other television shows that Cancer Gets LOST has amassed for the upcoming auction, Blacksparrow has a large collection of official LOST props, costumes and set pieces on consignment that will be featured in the auction as well! 100% of the proceeds from all items sold on behalf of CGL will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society, and a portion of all proceeds from consigned items will also be donated to the ACS!

316: The LOST 10 Year Reunion PaleyFest Panel & Walker Stalker Con!

Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Yunjin Kim, Ian Somerhalder & Maggie Grace at the LOST 10 Year Anniversary Reunion panel at PaleyFest (photo courtesy of @PatMc4Fun)

In March, we were fortunate to be able to attend both Walker Stalker Con in Chicago and the LOST 10 Year Anniversary Reunion panel at PaleyFest in LA! Below is a rundown of our fantastic experiences at both.

WALKER STALKER CON

Jared joins Nestor Carbonell on stage at his Walker Stalker Con panel (photo courtesy of @erikaolson)

Jared had the great pleasure of meeting and spending time with Nestor Carbonell (Richard Alpert) at Walker Stalker Con in Chicago, and Nestor went above and beyond in support of CGL. He signed a variety of LOST and Bates Motel items, invited Jared on stage to join his panel to talk about CGL and even created a video promo for us (which we will reveal soon)! Special thanks to The Walker Stalkers themselves, James Frazier and Eric Nordhoff, for this opportunity – they’ve been so very kind to CGL!

CGL CHARITY AUCTION ACQUISITIONS

While Jared was in Chicago, Jo met up with a few very good friends of CGL in LA about our big charity auction in September. Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, show runners for Once Upon a Time, kindly signed items and also donated additional memorabilia! In addition, our friends at Bad Robot generously provided a few boxes of rare LOST prints and screen used props! Once again, the generosity from both parties was tremendous and we are always incredibly grateful for the contributions they make to our charity auctions.

Jo with Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz at the Once Upon a Time offices

Leading up to our big auction in September, we will be releasing preview teases of items that will be featured – and stay tuned for an official announcement about our new auction host partner! This year, we have designated 100% of the proceeds from our auction to benefit the American Cancer Society.

LOST 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY REUNION PANEL

Moderator Paul Scheer, Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Yunjin Kim, Ian Somerhalder, Maggie Grace, Ian Henry Cusick and Malcolm David Kelley – the LOST 10 Year Anniversary Reunion panel  (photo: @PatMc4Fun)

Jared quickly returned to LA to join Jo for the LOST 10 Year Anniversary Reunion panel at PaleyFest! Due to a variety of fortuitous circumstances, we were able to join the cast in the green room backstage before and after the panel. They allowed us to set up a table of auction items and the cast all stopped by to sign and chat with us. We were thrilled to have that opportunity, and once again this experience confirmed that all involved with LOST continue to be the most generous and supportive cast and creative in the business. The show debuted ten years ago and ended four years ago, and yet – they all still recognize and appreciate the amazing community and camaraderie they were responsible for creating.

CGL GUESTS OF HONOR

Jo and Sandy

We were very honored to have been able to provide two very special guests with tickets to the panel; two cancer survivors and huge LOST fans that made the journey specifically for the event. Robert traveled all the way from Europe, and Sandy drove up from San Diego! It was such a pleasure meeting both of them, and we will continue to send them positive vibes for good health.

MESSAGES FROM THE ISLAND

Jo, Damon, Jared & David backstage after the LOST PaleyFest panel

As a side project a while back, Jared had the idea to gather notes of encouragement and support for Damon Lindelof after his abrupt departure from Twitter. He created Messages From the Island, put all of the notes into a nice Dharma wine bottle and was able to deliver it in person after the PaleyFest panel. The look of joy on Damon’s face was genuine and heartwarming, and it was one of the more memorable moments we’ve experienced in the many years of LOST adventures together!

We have many exciting announcements on the horizon, so please stay tuned!

The Shape of Things to Come: CGL in 2014!

Hello, LOST friends – and happy 8.23! We’ve missed you and have been feeling unusually nostalgic lately, for two specific reasons.

First, because tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of our first Cancer Gets LOST live events (webcast and fundraising fan party)! One year ago this week, so many of you generously bid on items in our charity auction, watched the live webcast or attended the fundraising event in Los Angeles. That was an experience that we continue to look back upon quite fondly, and we are still in awe of your incredible contributions and support.

Second, because next year marks 10 years since LOST entered/changed our lives – and we are thrilled to announce that CGL will be hosting and/or sponsoring a live event (to be determined) at LOST 2014 on Oahu! As many of you know, LOST 2014 is the official fan gathering in Hawaii to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of LOST’s debut (9/22/14). To answer the most obvious and frequently asked next question – not yet (cast/crew will be invited but due to their filming schedules/locations and unknown career moves in 2014, we aren’t able to confirm anyone until later next year)! [Side note: I am actually working with the LOST 2014 organizers as their talent liaison, so rest assured that WHEN we are able to announce special guests – you will be among the first to know on all of our various social networks!]

Right now, CGL is in the planning stages for our involvement and partnership with LOST 2014, but here are few details about our plans for next year that we can share:

  1. We are very aware that those of you who plan to attend LOST 2014 will be spending a great deal of money to do so; therefore rest assured that whatever CGL winds up hosting/sponsoring – it will be an affordable option, and every cent will be donated to charity!
  2. There will be a CGL online auction featuring rare and signed memorabilia from a wide variety of television shows and films, which will run concurrently with the events in Hawaii (starting 1 week before and ending 1 week after)! We wanted to offer something for those of you who aren’t attending to participate! Of course the auction will be open to everyone around the world, regardless of whether or not you’re going to be in Hawaii. * Please note: winning bidders will be responsible for all auction item shipping costs and insurance.
  3. 100% of the proceeds from the CGL LOST 2014 event and CGL 2014 auction will go directly to the American Cancer Society, our charity of choice for next year!

Stay tuned for more details – and thank you for your continued interest and support!

Please ‘like’ the official LOST 2014 Facebook page and follow them on Twitter for updates. The Team Behind the Curtain is working very diligently in the hopes of offering fans good travel deals, island tour options and (fingers crossed) a Pilot screening! By the way – if you’re interested, they just started a LOST re-watch and are also seeking a logo designer; all of the details are on their site and FB page!

Just a reminder – you can also follow CGL on FB & Twitter. 🙂

Namaste!

– Jo

Post-Auction Update: Winning Bidders – Please Read

* UPDATE: On 9/7/12, we were finally able to forward all of  your final and verified winning bid and credit card information to the National Brain Tumor Society. Please give them 1-2 weeks to process over 250 bids as donations, and then give us 1-2 weeks after that time to prepare and ship your items!

Greetings, Cancer Gets LOST supporters and charity auction winners! We wanted to keep you posted about the status of your items.

As noted in our Auction FAQ, we kindly ask that you give us 6-8 weeks for the delivery of your items. Right now we are still on target to do so, but are currently experiencing a delay due to Bidding for Good’s technical errors. As you know, Bidding for Good is our auction host site, and their engineers are working to fix the issues. Long story short, when we look at Winning Bidder and Awarded Item reports, not every auction item winner is aligned properly with their winning item(s). We will not forward your credit card information on the National Brain Tumor Society until we are 100% sure that it is all correct!

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

It would be tremendously helpful if all winning bidders double checked their Winning Bid Alert emails with their Bidding for Good accounts, to make sure that there aren’t any discrepancies. If there are, please forward your Winning Bid Alert emails to Jared, along with an explanation of said discrepancies (jared [at] cancergetslost [dot] org).

Thank you in advance for your patience! Once BFG has fixed the errors, we will provide the NBTS with your winning bid information. Every single bid will then be processed by the NBTS as a tax-deductible donation (where applicable).

To avoid confusion, PLEASE do not call/contact either Bidding for Good or the NBTS. We are working very closely with each of them to ensure 100% accuracy, and will keep you posted along the way.

If you have any questions, please contact us directly:

  • jo [at] jopinionated [dot] com
  • jared [at] cancergetslost [dot] org

Namaste,
